My wife and I love to renovate, or that’s what we would like you to believe. And for the outsider, that is probably how it appears. We are by no means property moguls, over the past 12 years we have bought, renovated and sold 2 properties all with the intention of finding that perfect little “somewhere” to grow old and start a family. On to property number 3 and we are probably no closer to finding that perfect place, but making the most out of what we have found will do for now!
A little bit about us: We started out in a small 2 bedder townhouse located in the inner Brisbane suburb of Taringa. We were fortunate to pick this up for a great price when townhouse and unit properties were still affordable. Over a 3 year period, we renovated out little abode from top to bottom and back to the top again. Spending evenings and weekends plodding through the jobs. We were young, naive and full of motivation! But lacked a cohesive plan and hadn’t quite worked out our design identity. We decided to sell up in 2010 and move “out to the suburbs” for a bit more land.
We loved the Shires, a collection of suburbs south south-west of Brisbane tucked in between the Brisbane River to the North and West, Oxley Creek to the East and Ipswich Road to the South. The Shire of Oxley was once comprised of the suburbs of Chelmer, Graceville, Sherwood, Corinda and Oxley and this was where we wanted to be.
We set out to find our dream home and after a few setbacks, we found a late 50’s weatherboard in the suburb of Oxley just dying for some love. Buying in the peak of the market isn’t great, but fortunately, our previously development achieved a great sale price which gave us the much-needed capital to stretch.
We sold our Oxley home in 2017 after much deliberation. Why? Well, we never formally went on the market. We were approached by a young real estate agent looking for housing stock. We entertained the idea of selling up, and before we knew it we were in a negotiation with a young motivated couple looking to enter the Oxley area.
The night of the decision we flipped back and forth and opted to sleep on it. We went to bed that night with our minds made, we were staying! Sure, we might sell in the future, but on our terms, when we were ready. Needless to say, we backflipped after a restless nights sleep and decided it was too good an offer to pass up and the kickstart we needed to get back out there in pursuit of our dream. Forty days later we were moving out of Oxley and into Sherwood and that is where our next renovation journey is now underway!
